25 Area Students Receive FCMC Foundation Health Career Scholarships Totaling $55K

McCONNELLSBURG – Twenty-five area students received 2023 Fulton County Medical Center Foundation Health Career Scholarships, totaling an all-time high of $55,000 this spring.

Nine graduating high school students and 16 college students, including five post-graduate students, were awarded stipends ranging from $1,000 to $3,500 by the Foundation’s scholarship committee.

“Once again this year, we can be very proud of those students who came to the Foundation as scholarship candidates,” said Loy Garber, Chair of the Scholarship Committee and FCMC Foundation Board Member. “We are pleased and excited to be able to share our financial resources to help them achieve their ambitions of becoming a health care provider.”

The nine graduating high school students are:
Morgan DeShong is a graduate of Forbes Road. She is a recipient of a Betty Lea Henderson Nursing Scholarship. She will be attending Hagerstown Community College, majoring in Nursing.

Brianna Kylor is a graduate of Central Fulton. She is a recipient of a Betty Lea Henderson Nursing Scholarship. She will be attending University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, majoring in Nursing.

Zoe Layton is a graduate of Southern Fulton. She is a recipient of a Betty Lea Henderson Nursing Scholarship. She will be attending Mount Aloysius College, majoring in Nursing.

Bryonna Ross is a graduate of Central Fulton. She is a recipient of a Betty Lea Henderson Nursing Scholarship. She will be attending University of Pittsburgh, majoring in Nursing.

Molly Mellott is a graduate of Central Fulton. She is a recipient of the inaugural Fulton County Industrial Development Authority Scholarship. She will be attending Saint Francis University, studying to be a Physician’s Assistant.

Sarah Schepis is a graduate of Forbes Road. She is a recipient of the Clair & Dorothy Miller Scholarship. She will be attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania, studying to be a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

Kyla McCusker is a graduate of Southern Fulton. She is a recipient of an FCMC Foundation General Scholarship. She will be attending Allegany College of Maryland, studying Respiratory Therapy.

Joseph Bryan is a graduate of Southern Fulton. He is a recipient of an FCMC Foundation General Scholarship. He will be attending Shippensburg University, majoring in Biology/Pre-Med.

Christopher “Dane” Harvey is a graduate of Southern Fulton. He is a recipient of an FCMC Foundation General Scholarship. He will be attending Cowley College, majoring in Paramedic/Fire Science.

The five post-graduate college students are:

Cooper Grove – He was awarded for the second time in as many years the Dr. William L. Milroth Doctors of Tomorrow Post-Graduate Scholarship. He is attending Penn State College of Medicine.

Madison Spade – She was awarded the Russell C. McLucas, MD, Scholarship Post-Graduate Scholarship. She is attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), majoring in Speech Language Pathology. She received her undergraduate degree from IUP.

Abigail Heister – She was awarded the Russell C. McLucas, MD, Scholarship Post-Graduate Scholarship. She will be attending Florida Institute of Technology, majoring in Clinical Psychology. She received her undergraduate degree from Shippensburg University.

Calli Nesbitt – She was awarded the Russell C. McLucas, MD, Scholarship Post-Graduate Scholarship. She will be attending Touro University (NV), majoring in Occupational Therapy. She received her undergraduate degree from Temple University.

Madison Breeze – She was awarded the Russell C. McLucas, MD, Scholarship Post-Graduate Scholarship. She is attending Duquesne University, pursuing her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She received her undergraduate degree from Duquesne University.

The 11 undergraduate college students are:

Emma Ott – As a senior nursing student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), she is a recipient of the second installment of the Betty Lea Henderson Nursing Scholarship.

Katelyn Truax – As a senior nursing student at Frostburg State University, she is a recipient of the second installment of the Betty Lea Henderson Nursing Scholarship.

Carson Elbin - He is a recipient of the inaugural Fulton County Industrial Development Authority Scholarship. He is attending Saint Francis University, majoring as a Physician.

Dayton Pelton - He is a recipient of the inaugural Fulton County Industrial Development Authority Scholarship. He is attending Shippensburg University, majoring in Biology with a focus on Pre-Optometry.

Libby Skiles - She is a recipient of the inaugural Fulton County Industrial Development Authority Scholarship. She is attending Penn State Mont Alto, majoring in Nursing.

Alexis Hoover – She is a recipient of the Paul and Louie Stahl Memorial Nursing Scholarship. She is attending Penn State Altoona, majoring in Nursing.

Abigail Fischer – She is a recipient of the inaugural Jean E. Toms Memorial Scholarship. She is attending Hagerstown Community College/Frostburg State University, majoring in Nursing.

Drew Gordon – She is a recipient of the Patriot Federal Credit Union Scholarship. She is attending Old Dominion University, majoring as a Dental Hygienist.

Aiden Barnett - He is a recipient of an FCMC Foundation General Scholarship. He is attending Lock Haven University, majoring as a Physician Assistant.

Rachel Bradshaw – She is a recipient of an FCMC Foundation General Scholarship. She is attending Wilkes University, majoring in Pharmacy.

Olivia Henry – She is a recipient of an FCMC Foundation General Scholarship. She is attending Juniata College, majoring in Biology/Pre-Med.

“We are extremely grateful to all the individuals, foundations and businesses who have given us named scholarships,” said Mike Straley, Executive Director of the FCMC Foundation. “This year alone, we have two new ones – the Fulton County Industrial Authority and the Jean E. Toms Scholarship. We are entrusted with all these scholarships to award them to the best possible candidates. During the course of these in-person interviews, our committee sees the commitment these students have put into pursuing their health care careers. Their journeys are unique and impressive.”

Since 2001, 273 scholarships have been awarded for a total of $384,750.

“Local students pursuing a healthcare career and being awarded local dollars is the scholarship committee’s focus,” said Straley. “In so many of the interviews, the students have indicated they love this community and want to come back here to serve – and some already are serving. That’s a win-win for Fulton County. Our local community has supported our scholarship program and for that we are grateful.”
