Summer 2024 Nurse Extern Program:

The Fulton County Medical Center is proud to offer the Nurse Extern Program. This program can be completed in either 4 or 8 week assignments, leaving plenty of time to still enjoy your summer break! Nurse Externs at FCMC earn a pay rate of $15/hr! The purpose of the FCMC Nurse Extern Program is to offer nursing students a temporary job opportunity where they can partner with an experienced Registered Nurse to learn and demonstrate defined patient care activities.

To start, you'll sit in on our New Hire Orientation Days. To get a full understanding of FCMC and all it has to offer employees and our community.

In our 4 week assignment, your time will be split up between our Acute Care Unit and our Level IV Trauma Center Emergency Department.
In our 8 week assignment, your time will be split up between our Acute Care Unit, Level IV Trauma Center Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery Center, and our Outpatient IV Infusion Center.

All applicants are automatically placed in to our 4 week program. If you wish to complete the 8 week program, please indicate that on your application.

As a FCMC Nurse Extern, you will be placed 1:1 with an experienced nurse preceptor. You will work 36 hours/week (7am-7pm), mirroring the schedule of your preceptor. Nurse Externs are able to request unpaid time off during their assignment.

At the completion of the Nurse Extern Program, candidates are eligible to continue employment at FCMC in the capacity of a Per Diem CNA by working a minimum of 12 hours/month or by continuing their Externship by working a minimum of 24 hours/month.

Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, a Nurse Extern is able to complete specific duties and skills that include but are not limited to: demonstrating physical assessment skills, start/assess peripheral IVs, observe procedures and sterile technique skills, perform POC glucose testing, participate in interdisciplinary discharge planning, and demonstrate and document routine basic care skills (bathing, safety, hygiene activities).

Our Nurse Extern program provides real-life experience to nursing students like you to showcase how amazing nursing can be. But, don't take it from us. Here are reviews from students who went through our program:

Sarah Coffman, Nurse Extern Summer 2023, Allegany College of Maryland: "My nursing externship this summer was an incredible learning experience. I had the opportunity to rotate through various departments and each rotation provided me with unique insight, hands-on experience, and helped me grow as a nurse. I learned so much and became so confident in my skills and abilities. From monitoring and assisting in continuity of care for patients, to discussing the process of administering medications, every moment was a chance to learn which I am very grateful for. Overall, my nursing externship was a valuable stepping stone in my journey of becoming a nurse. The nurses I worked alongside with during my time there showed the type of nurse I strive to be.

Derrick Stubenhoffer, Nurse Extern Summer 2023, Penn State Mont Alto: "Getting to see different areas of the hospital is very helpful to get to see the different types of nursing" "The staff are always there to help you if you need anything, are great at letting you practice different skills, and allow you to observe every procedure."
